Tanya Plibersek apologises for likening Peter Dutton to Voldemort

Senior Labor MP Tanya Plibersek has apologised to Liberal MP Peter Dutton for likening him to Voldermort in a radio interview.

Speaking to Scott Emerson on the 4BC radio station, Ms Plibersek was asked her opinion of Mr Dutton, who is almost certain to become the next leader of the Liberal party.

"Well I think there will be a lot of children who have watched a lot of Harry Potter films who will be very frightened of what they will see at night, that's for sure," replied the Labor frontbencher.

"What, are you saying he looks strange, he looks odd?" Emerson asked.

"I am saying he looks a bit like Voldemort and we will see whether he can do what he promised he would do when he was last running for leader, which is smile more," she said.

Mr Emerson said it sounded like she was attacking Mr Dutton over his looks.

"No, I am just saying he is not the warm and friendly face of the Liberal party," she replied.

"And if this last election taught us anything, it taught us that the Liberal Party has moved too far to the extremes of politics."

Plibersek has since reached out to Dutton to apologise for her comments, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese saying her remarks were unacceptable.

"I do want to change the way that politics functions in this country," Albo said.

"People do have conflict fatigue."

Plibersek is not the only Labor politician to attack the expected next Liberal leader this week, with Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan blasting Dutton as not being fit to be prime minister.

"He's an extremist, and I don't think he fits with modern Australia at all," said Mr McGowan.

"He doesn't seem to listen, he's extremely conservative and I actually don't think he's that smart."

"I've seen him present on things [and] I don't really pick up there's much there."

"As opposed to Scott Morrison, who is a clever guy, I don't pick up that Peter Dutton is fit to be prime minister."

Nat Barr loses it at Tanya Plibersek and Barnaby Joyce live on air

Natalie Barr has lost her patience with the federal election campaign, as she slammed Tanya Plibersek and Barnaby Joyce in a fiery Sunrise segment.

In the on-air debate on Monday morning, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce asked Ms Plibersek on if Labor's policy to help first homebuyers, by buying a stake in their properties, applied to voters' taxable or gross income.

Tanya was unable to answer the question directly, leading Joyce to erupt "Which one is it Tanya?!" and Barr to say she felt sorry for Australian voters.

The two senior politicians were each grilled about their party's policies on helping first homebuyers, after the Coalition proposed a plan to allow Aussie families to withdraw up to $50,000 from their superannuation to buy their first property.

Labor is proposing the Federal government would contribute up to 40 per cent of the purchase price of a first home.

The plan would be only be accessible to voters on a taxable income of up to $90,000 per annum for singles, or $120,000 for couples, but the figures are unclear if they are gross or net payments.

"Which one is it Tanya?! It's your policy," an exasperated Mr Joyce asked. "Can you explain your policy? It's the last week of the election!"

"How do you not understand your own policy?"

Barr piled onto Ms Plibersek, asking, "Can you answer the question?"

Ms Plibersek eventually confirmed Labor's policy was based on taxable income, to which Mr Joyce implied she was told the figure by an off-camera staffer.

Natalie Barr then wrapped up the segment before it could delve further into an on-air screaming match.

"Can anyone feel sorry for the people of Australia this morning, trying to work out what on earth we are voting on this Saturday," Barr said.

Ms Plibersek added "I feel embarrassed the deputy Prime Minister carries on like that, I really do."

Barr fired back, "I feel sorry for us, because we've got to walk into those polling booths and we have to try and work out what on earth we're voting on!"

Earlier in the segment, Tanya Plibersek slammed the Coalition's housing affordability scheme, citing why such measures had not worked in the past as housing prices would skyrocket.

"There is a reason why John Howard, Peter Costello… and Malcolm Turnbull rejected this policy," Ms Plibersek said.

"All the Liberals in the past have rejected it because you shouldn't have to choose between housing today and poverty in old age."

"Scott Morrison and his government have been around for almost a decade. It's harder to buy a home, it's harder to rent and it's more expensive and there's more homelessness than ever."

The Block’s Tanya reveals her reality TV past

Star of the latest season of The Block, Tanya Guccione, is no stranger to controversy, having been embroiled in a cheating scandal that was revealed during the show’s finale. But it turns out she’s no stranger to reality television, either – The Block wasn’t her first time on the small screen.

Speaking to Kyle and Jackie O on Tuesday morning, Tanya revealed she was a contestant on the second season of Popstars back in 2001 (the season that produced short-lived group Scandal’Us). Jackie O was a judge on the show, and Kyle Sandilands also made a brief appearance during the season.

Of her time on the show, Tanya said, “I was 19 … I remember you guys from all the way back then. You were awesome then, and awesome now.”

Then 19-year-old Tanya made it through the initial cattle call audition, and was then selected as one of the 30 finalists to travel to the Gold Coast for the final competition to see who would make it into the band.

Tanya told Kyle and Jackie O that she swore she’d never do reality TV after her brief stint on Popstars, and watching her final episode, it’s easy to understand why. After being called into a meeting with the judges, Tanya was asked how she thought she’d performed that day.

She said, “I think I did pretty well. I’m actually really proud of myself right now, I’m not going to hold that back.” Judge Jason Coleman responded, “Well, good on you. I’m glad that you’re proud of yourself, because we’re going to let you go.” Ouch.

Tanya dealt with a tonne of backlash after admitting that she was responsible for The Block’s season-long cheating scandal in last week’s final episode, but winners Mitch and Mark threw their support behind her, urging fans to give her a chance. The couple wrote, “Tanya, the purple headed girl & the face of the big lie of The Block. She made a mistake. Have you ever made a mistake & tried to cover it up, it gained momentum and before you knew, there was no way out, you’d dug such a big hole you couldn’t see any way out – image doing this on the biggest show on Australian television…

“This is what happened to Tanya, we know her, she’s good, but she stuffed up, we have too made mistakes, you all saw me (Mitch) with my inside head thoughts that I blurted out. If you’ve ever made errors in judgment in your life that has embarrassed you, please consider what Tanya has gone thru (sic) and is dealing with before you judge her, she deserves a chance – we know this is difficult and we’ve had time to talk with Tanya and support her to move forward, please join us and give Tanya a chance, we all deserve it.”

Image: Nine/Seven

Winners of The Block issue statement to Tanya

The winners of this season of The Block, Mitch and Mark, have issued a public statement about fellow contestant Tanya, urging fans to “give her a chance” in the wake of the revelation that she had been cheating all season.

Mitch and Mark butted heads with Tanya and her husband Vito throughout the season, largely due to the latter’s cheating: Tanya was found to be in possession of a photo of the show’s production schedule, which she claimed all season long had been sent to her by an anonymous tradie who wanted to give her an advantage.

Contestants Josh and Luke revealed the truth in Sunday’s finale, however: Tanya took the photo herself way back during the first week of filming, and had been lying about it all season. Tanya broke down in tears as she faced the rest of the cast after this bombshell had been dropped, and admitted she took the photo.

“I don‘t think anybody is as embarrassed or as disappointed as me,” she said. “I am not a stupid woman but I did a stupid thing.”

Mitch and Mark had labelled Tanya and Vito “liars” in spats throughout the season, but evidently in better spirits after their $750,000 win, they were in a more understanding mood and encouraged fans not to throw Tanya under the bus.

Taking to Instagram on Monday, the couple wrote, “Tanya, the purple headed girl & the face of the big lie of The Block. Obviously that wasn’t the case.”

The conflict came to a head when Tanya faced the other contestants with claims she was prepared to pay the whole time.

“Because (our laundry) was so huge there was no way we were gonna get it done (during living room week), so we just opted to get it done this week,” she explained to Mark, referring to why she and Vito didn’t complete their laundry when instructed.

Image: The Block / Channel 9

“(It was a) huge out of pocket expense,” she said, showing Mark her invoice for the installation.

Mark called out her claims, saying: “I understand that invoice was issued because Scotty and Keith found out what was happening”.

He added that Kinsman had also told him Tanya wasn’t expecting to pay.

“Come and speak to me next time,” Tanya rebutted.

The latest tense exchange came after Tanya made a comment earlier in the season calling Mitch and Mark “pigs”.

Tanya and Mark debated whether Tanya’s comment, “Don’t fight with pigs because you get dirty and they love it”, was a direct insult or not.

“We probably still have never resolved one of those comments about us being pigs,” Mark said.

But, Mark and Tanya were able to come to a kind of resolution, with Tanya saying, “I am sorry that you took it that way”.

Mark also thanked her for showing him the Kinsman invoice.

As for her apology, he said, “I’ll have to process that.”

In a parting comment while walking away with Vito, Tanya said: “I love how he wants me to apologise when it’s like ‘oh also, you called Vito a ***, but hold on, I’ll apologise because I’m not a condescending old man’.”

Image: The Block / Channel 9

The Block host Scott Cam has spoken up about the cheating scandal that has plagued the show, complaining that he has been “scrambling to save” the program.

While having a chat with Fitzy and Wippa on Nova on Wednesday morning, Cam unleashed when questioned about the controversy.

Several contestants admitted to viewing and sharing a photo of the show’s secret production schedule.

Having access to the schedule earlier than other contestants gives an unfair advantage, as it would allow them to plan their rooms weeks in advance.

“I love The Block and I don’t love anyone messing with it, and that’s messing with it. This is a competition to win $100,000 plus more – up to $900,000 is the record. People have left their homes, their kids, in an attempt to make some life-changing money,” the TV host said.

Left to Right: Kirsty and Jessy, Josh and Luke, Tanya and Vito on The Block.

“[Contestants] Kirsty and Jesse, the country singing duo – these guys are battlers and this is a really big moment for them.

“And to have someone cheat and get an advantage, to me is un-Australian, no good and it’s got to be weeded out.”

Twins Josh and Luke were the first to be called out for cheating, and later they demanded couple Tanya and Vito come forward as well.

Tanya went on to claim the photo had been sent to her “anonymously” by an ex-tradie on The Block.

“We’ve never seen anything like it on The Block before,” he said.

Tanya and Luke. Tanya and Vito had the photo, the boys had the photo, they knew all along what the schedule was.

“The ball was in their court, certainly not mine and for them to say that that sh*ts me up the wall.”

Meanwhile, Tanya, who is at the centre of the cheating scandal, told news.com.au that she believes the entire controversy had been a “set up.”

Tanya and Vito. Image: The Block

The contestant says the production schedule had been placed in an easily accessible area, which could perhaps have been purposeful in an effort to tempt contestants.

“Obviously the photo did end up in my possession, but it was actually in a really obvious spot,” she said.

“Most of us came by [the schedule] because it was right by the toilet, it was right there on a massive board.

“It was right there in front of us, so I felt very singled out, like I was the only one who saw it but plenty of others used the toilet that day.

“It felt almost like it could have been set up.”
